Journey to Trailhead 2022

Our journey to the trailhead (Duncannon, PA) started on Saturday, April 23 (the same day and date 39 years ago that we had our first date — you’ll read all about that infamous “first date” in our upcoming book.)  How appropriate that we started on this date.

We started out early heading south (HOBOS GOING SOBO IN THEIR RAV-O) from NY with our friends Beth Thorp and Ann Beyer in tow.  What a difference this journey was to the trailhead versus last year when we took the bus ride with all the young 20- and 30-year-olds.  Much more enjoyable for me anyway, not sure what Brad thought having to listen to three women yakking the whole time.

We made a stop at Sight and Sound to watch the biblical musical production of “David” in Lancaster. It was phenomenal!!! Highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t yet seen it, you will be amazed!  During the intermission an employee (Abigail Fields) approached us to talk and share information about the show and later surprised our Annie with a birthday gift.  What a great surprise that was so thoughtful for her to do.

After the show we drove to our final destination, The Doyle Hotel where we had reservations but arrived to an empty and very closed, locked up hotel.  Plan B?!  After a call to the hotel, we found out that there had been a funeral that day and they had to close early. It all worked out and Donald (the owner's son who is in business with his dad) came and let us in.  After getting our rooms squared away, we had dinner with Donald at Sorrentos where he shared a lot of history about the hotel and the plans they have as new owners of the hotel. It is an iconic place well known to AT hikers so it’s good news that it is being remodeled and refurbished.

I am late in posting this blog, so I have to tell you, Week One is almost done and it’s FULL of adventure, surprises, sweat, pain, laughs, old friends, new friends … so much to share!  Until we’re able to share again, may YOUR journey be full of new adventure!

Donald (co-owner of The Doyle) was kind enough to give us a personal tour of the hotel, showing us the renovations being made in the Ballroom, Bar & Lounge.  100+ years old, with period architecture. There was an entrance marked "Ladies Entrance" artistically painted over the door.  Donald explained that back in the day, ladies were not allowed to enter the bar using the front entrance.
