And so the adventure has begun ... we took the 8:20 pm bus from Monroe, GA on Monday to finally arrive in Wytheville, VA at 6:00 this morning, Tuesday. Let’s just say, we did not get much sleep on the bus. Took a taxi to town and will be staying in a motel for the night before we hit the trail in the morning.
Things we’ve learned so far:
No one our age takes the bus. It’s filled with kids in their 20s or 30s.
When did kids that age come up with their own dialect, we had no idea what most of them were saying!
Still trying to figure out if I was hit on or what this young kid was saying to me. Something about “dropping my smile”, what in the world does that mean? How could he tell anything since I was wearing a mask!
Bus mates don’t necessarily respect your personal space. Mine sat spread eagle the whole leg of the first bus (no, it wasn’t Brad!)
There was some aggressive behavior at times between the passengers. I never really felt uncomfortable, but let’s just say, I am so glad that adventure is over!!!
In the midst of all that, we still found those that were compassionate and were thinking of us and not themselves. The first bus we took was full so there weren’t 2 seats together, one kid tried to get people to switch so we could sit together, but no one budged. One girl did change her seat so that we at least sat close by to each other. There are still those that think of others.
And lastly, don’t always assume the bus station is directly in a town surrounded by motels. There are those stops in no man’s land and you’ll need to figure out how to get yourself to civilization. For a planner, that is hard to just be “winging it”, but I’m determined I am going to learn to “just go with the flow” and trust God (and Brad) to figure it out for me.
